Shells + Wreath Project

We came back with lots of shells from our last Florida trip (as we usually do when visiting the ocean).  I wanted to put them on display but still be able to have my daughters touch and feel the different shells.  Shadowboxes are really wonderful but almost all of them have a glass front and can sometimes be pricey.  So I decided to make my own.  I bought an open frame (16″ x 20″) on clearance, some foam core board cut to size (needs to be sturdy), and black velour fabric to cover the foam core board.  This is how it came out…

Total cost for all material was $15.  What’s also great is that the frame is so light my daughters will be able to handle it (and no worry about broken glass).

I promised to share photo’s of the yarn wreath I made a few months ago and wouldn’t you know it, it completely slipped my mind.  Here it is hanging on our front door…

Wrapping the foam core wreath took FOREVER!  Randomly wrapping the yarn came out looking really messy and so I started over and opted to line each yarn fiber next to the other.  The flowers were made individually from felt and the letter B was added for our last name.

Anthropologie Earth Day

I wanted to share with you some photo’s from the new window display’s over at Anthropologie.  They have decorated them for Earth Day utilizing corks…thousands of corks!

Love the various hues of blue and green corks.  So what will happen to all of these corks when they are ready to change out displays?  Recycle them of course!  The corks will be sent to Cork ReHarvest to be broken down and turned into items such as fishing bobs and new flooring.

I can’t even imagine how long it took to create the huge cork balls above.

Oh, in case you were wondering, Earth Day this year is April 22.

Flip-Flops On and Ready to Go

Just wanted to pop in and let you know that I will be away from the blog until April 1.  We are all packed up and ready to go on our (desperately needed) Florida vacation.  I am so longing to see the ocean, feel the warm sun, and leave this cold Michigan weather behind.   I do plan on checking out some shops while I’m on vacation and will share with you any good finds.

These Uber French (yes, that’s the name) suitcases from Design Child are just adorable!

Beachy Vacation

Good Morning friends!  This week I will be busy planning and packing for our family trip to sunny skies Florida.  We will be spending 10 glorious days at the beach and hopefully stuffing ourselves with lots of seafood (thankfully the kids love it)!  Nothing will be rushed or fast paced (not that it can be with two small kids) as my plan is for all of us to do some chilaxin’.  I don’t know why, but this tea cup’s illustration below grabbed my attention this morning and made me think of our trip.

House Guests + Pillows

I’m really looking forward to having my family visit with us next week.  My Uncle is due to fly in from Europe on Monday and my cousin (his daughter), along with her husband and son, will arrive later in the week.  All will be staying in our home which makes it ever so nice because we get to spend lots of time together.   My biggest joy, aside from catching up with everyone, will be having my daughters meet and play with their 2nd cousin.

Yesterday mornings sunshine has me thinking about Spring, birds, vegetable gardens, and my bed – namely the sheets and pillows.  While I’m not ready yet to give up my soft flannel sheets with its rows of little snowmen and pine trees, I am willing to Spring-ify my toss pillows on the bed and these from Sukan have just the right tone…

Of course this one is my favorite due to the array of colors.  But you probably already knew that.

How dramatic this pillow is with its black on black stem holding its bubbles of color.

Carpet Update:  As you may have read in a previous post, our carpet install in the basement was less than desirable.  It resulted in lumps, bumps, and waves near the seam and around our fireplace.  To make matters worse, the last few feet were pieced together because not enough carpet was order.   I spoke to the sales associate earlier this week and he wanted to send out an install crew to try and re-stretch the carpet.  How what about the portion that was pieced in?  He kept stating that he would “work with me” on that.  I’m not sure what exactly that means but I’m guessing that it will lead to a sizable price adjustment (if not, then I will insist that it be re-installed with the proper length carpet).  Yesterday the install crew came out and all I have to say is WOW!  Looks sooo much better.  Now just waiting on the “work with me” part…

P.S.  Today would have marked my Dad’s 66th birthday.  Happy Birthday Dad!  You have no idea how much I miss you…

Good Morning Tuesday + Elli Popp

Hope everyone had a great weekend and a wonderful start to their week. This morning I was up a bit earlier than normal as Miss Kaia is teething and sleep is not an option (thankfully she hasn’t been crying!). I spent some of the wee hours of the morning scouring the internet for wallpaper and fabrics. You may remember me taking evaluation of the rooms in my house in this post.  One idea that emerged was related to the kids toy shelf in our living room (photo here).  Many times the toy shelf is not as organized as the picture shows (yes, for me that’s organized!).  By mid-afternoon, toys are all over the living room and the shelves sit empty.  As I looked at it in this state during my evaluation, I noticed how bare and blank it sat in the corner.  Then an idea sprung – why not wallpaper or decoupage the back of the toy shelf ?  This way a marvelous surprise could develop as the toy shelf contents were removed.  So while on my path for wallpaper, I found Elli Popp.   Check out this gorgeousness!

Her designs and colors just excited me when I saw them!  Many come in different colors and can be ordered through their online retailers.  While I don’t think these designs are what I’m looking for the kids toy shelf, I will definitely be keeping Elli in my back pocket.  I’ll keep you posted on my progress.
